    September 14, 2020

Priscilla Chan is an American Pediatrician and philanthropist. Chan was at the top of her

class and was valedictorian for her own high school graduation. She went on to attend

Harvard University where she met Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, who

would later become her husband. After obtaining a Biology degree from Harvard, Chan

pursued her medical degree at University of California, San Francisco, in 2008. Together,

Zuckerberg and Chan have founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) which works on

improving education, science, immigration, housing, local issues, and criminal justice

Written by Koua Vang, Asian News USA

Reading is an important tool that will help a child succeed in life. Teaching reading skills to a child at an early age is crucial. By the time, a child is 1 to 2 years old, the child has learned to discover his or her surroundings and is slowly learning to communicate with others.

At this stage, the child is learning simple words, and phrases, that allows the child to communicate with his or her brothers, sisters and parents.  There are some steps, that you can implement to assist a child with developing his or her reading skills.

Here is what you can do to help teach a 1 to 2 year old how to read:

    • Provide an environment that encourages and supports learning.
    •  Buy a variety of books for the child.
    • Give these books for the child to play and look at the pictures inside of the books.
    • Model holding the books correctly with the prints in the correct direction.
    • Read the books and point to the words as you read.
    •  Read at least 20 minutes or more to the child every day.
    •  Take the child to the library at least every three weeks and checkout more books to read to the child.

If you want your child to become a good reader and to give the child a better chance to be successful in life, you need to be your child's first teacher. When you follow this simple process, you are on your way to becoming your child's first teacher which significantly contributes to making a difference in your child's life.
